Costa Rica Renewable Energy
The World Energy Council's (WEC) annual World Energy Trilemma report with the Annual Energy Sustainability Index was released last week. The WEC measures energy sustainability as an index of 3 variables: energy security; social equity; and environmental impact.
Costa Rica took second place, just behind Switzerland, for the WEC's global environmental sustainability variable and came first place in Latin Americ overall.
Costa Rica's high rankings for environmental sustainability are a result of the country's generating over 90% of its electricity from renewable energy sources including hydropower (75.9%), wind turbines and other renewables (17.7%). Costa Rica derives only 6.4% of its electricity from conventional sources
Costa Rica has worked hard to create a reputation for green energy and sustainability. President Laura Chinchilla recently signed a decree establishing the first voluntary carbon market in the developing world to support Costa Rica's goal of being the first carbon-neutral country on the planet by 2021.
